A hundred years ago the town that is now Juneau was
actually two rival mining towns on opposite sides of Gastineau Channel. On the
west was Douglas, the largest town in Alaska, home of the mighty Treadwell Mine
-- one of the mining wonders of the world. On the east side was Juneau, home
to the mines that would eventually consolidate into the Alaska-Juneau mine
-- popularly called the A-J. Connecting the two towns were steamboat shuttles, just like our boat the Laurie Ellen. |

Come join me on a leisurely cruise down Gastineau
Channel. I'll point out the sights and tell you about the early history of
Juneau. You'll get to experience this beautiful area at water level. Keep an
eye peeled you'll see gulls, quite possibly eagles, and just maybe some of the
marine mammals that inhabit the area. Tickets are available on any Princess Cruise ship, at the Mount Roberts Tram or by calling us at (907) 723-0372. During the winter or during non-tour hours you can reach us on our land line (907) 789-0172. We look forward to taking you on our steam-powered cruise. Come on aboard. |
