Gold was found in Juneau in 1880 and in Douglas in 1881. Soon there were steamboats, like the Laurie Ellen, connecting the two neighboring, but rival communities.
From the 1880's till the autumn of 1935, when the Douglas Bridge opened to traffic, these steamboats were an everyday sight (all year-round)  operating increasingly busy schedules to meet the needs of the area's growing population.
